Crown Lengthening
If you feel you have a ‘gummy’ smile (more gum than teeth) an esthetic crown lengthening may be just what the doctor ordered. This relatively simple procedure usually takes about an hour and is essentially a ‘gum lift’. During the procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is removed, with the remaining tissue reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. While this procedure can be performed on just one tooth, it’s most often done on the entire smile. The end result is a wider, more beautiful smile.
Functional crown lengthening is also sometimes needed in order to perform other cosmetic or restorative procedures. If a tooth is too far decayed, broken below the gum line, or has insufficient structure for restoration using a crown or bridge, lowering of the gum and bone levels to expose more of the tooth surface may be required. Trimming the gum line and reshaping gums and supporting bone can allow adequate room for a high-quality tooth replacement.
Occlusal Adjustment
Occlusal, or bite, adjustment is often performed to remove interferences that keep upper and lower teeth from properly coming together. Interferences can prevent the jaw from closing in its anatomically correct position, and can occur as teeth develop, following an accident, or with accumulated wear over time. Dental work such as fillings, crowns, bridges and extractions can also cause interferences.
Crown Lengthening and Occlusal Adjustment IV Sedation
When providing our quality periodontal services, we offer moderate IV sedation. Moderate sedation is an altered state of consciousness wherein memory, anxiety and pain are greatly reduced and you become very relaxed and comfortable. Most people having moderate sedation think they were asleep during the procedure because they don’t remember anything from the time sedation started to the time they left the clinic.
